The hosts began the games scoring in the 27th minute when winger Don Smart was sent towards goal. Smart received the ball from defender, Marco Franco, and had a shot from the right hand corner of the eighteen yard box. His shot fired past Cosmos keeper Jimmy Maurer’s near post, scoring his second goal of the season.
It didn’t take long for the boys in green to find an equalizer as Emmanuel Ledesma got on the scoresheet in the 36th minute. A shot sent in from outside the box by Javi Márquez forced goalkeeper Jon Busch to punch the ball away from goal. His attempted clearance landed to Emmanuel Ledesma right in front of him, allowing him to fire into the back of the net for the 7th time this campaign.
The 40th minute almost saw the hosts take the lead once again. Indy defender, Daniel Keller, found Éamon Zayed who’s header forced Maurer into a diving save.
Jon Busch was forced into a diving save as well in the 50th minute. Midfielder, Javi Márquez challenged the 41 year-old with a long ranged shot, earning a corner-kick in the process.
In a wonderfully worked play, the hosts were able to find their second goal of the game in the 64th minute. Gerardo Torrado found a running Don Smart down the left flank towards goal. Smart crossed the ball across four Cosmos defenders to find Éamon Zayed at the far post who poked home his 10th goal of the year.
Fortunately for the visitors, an equalizing goal was not far away. Márquez was found by Emmanuel Ledesma at the right side of the box, leaving him room to run. The Spaniard turned towards goal, took a touch and fired past Busch at his near post with his left foot.
The hosts nearly found a winning goal when goalscorer Don Smart was sent through on goal. Smart’s shot had Jimmy Maurer planted however he saw his shot fired off of the cross bar, denying him a brace.
The referee blew the final whistle earning the New York Cosmos an important point on the road.
The boys in green return home for the final time this season next Saturday when they host FC Edmonton at MCU Park at 7pm.
