In their first game of the 2017 NASL Fall Season, the New York Cosmos have triumphed Spring Season champions Miami FC, by the score of 3-1.
It took only three minutes for the Cosmos to threaten Miami, courtesy of Eugene Starikov. With his back to goal, Starikov received the ball via a throw in, turned and fired at net. The Ukrainians attempt was saved and parried away for a corner.
Starikov almost found the scoresheet 26 minutes later off of a set-piece. The 28 year-old got his head on the delivery, however it went just wide of goal. Despite these great chances, both teams went into the half time break without a goal.
The 63rd minute provided the Cosmos with their best scoring opportunity of the game. Right-back Ryan Richter received the ball from Juan Guerra at the top of the box and was immediately taken down by Kwadwo Poku. Ayoze’s spot kick slammed the crossbar but the rebound was fired home by Eric Calvillo.
Miami’s Kwadwo Poku made up for his mistake shortly after by finding the back of the net himself. Substitute, Ariel Martínez dribbled down the line and found his Ghanian teammate inside the box who finished on the first-time.
In phenomenal fashion, Eric Calvillo found his second goal of the game in the 79th minute. The 19-year old was loosely marked by Richie Ryan, providing him space to work the ball on his left foot and fire from outside the box. The US youth international’s goal turned out to be the games winner and his fourth career goal.
Cosmos debutant, Kobi Moyal, was able to find the scoresheet prior to the final whistle. The midfielder stole the ball from defender Rhett Bernstein, dribbled past Miami’s keeper and slotted the ball home.
Giovanni Savarese, Head Coach of the Cosmos, commented on the match saying; “For us, it was important just to win this game. I think the most important part was how aggressive we were to pressure to win important balls, and I think that’s how the third goal came.”
The boys in green travel to California next Saturday to take on San Francisco Deltas while Miami FC take on FC Cincinnati in the US Open Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday.
