The New York Cosmos have beat Spanish side Valencia CF 2-0 in an international friendly.
Although the game’s first 45 minutes went scoreless, doesn’t mean there weren’t opportunities to do so. The 37th minute saw Cosmos forward Eugene Starikov come just inches from finding the scoresheet. Starikov was found by teammate Emmanuel Ledesma inside the box. The Ukrainian cut past a defender, chipped the keeper but his shot deflected off the cross bar and didn’t cross the line.
It only took nine minutes into the second half for the boys in green to open the games scoring. Starikov on the left side of the box crossed and found Eric Calvillo who took a touch and fired past Valencia’s goalkeeper Neto.
Cosmos keeper Kyle Zoebeck was put to the test several times throughout the second 45, impressing heavily. The 64th minute saw Zoebeck saving a dangerous header over the bar, forcing a corner. The second half also saw the debut of Cosmos midfielder Kobi Moyal. The Israeli joined the club from Beitar Jerusalem in January.
The eight-time NASL Soccer Bowl winners doubled their lead in the 77th minute courtesy of Emmanuel Ledesma. The play began when defender Ryan Richter found Starikov inside the box. The previous goalscorer’s attempt was saved however Ledesma fired the rebound into the empty net.
The boys in green contained their lead until the final whistle, completing their victory over Valencia in front of an impressively sized crowd.
Giovanni Savarese, the Head Coach of the New York Cosmos, commented on the occasion saying; “It’s been fantastic for us to be here. We’re very privileged to have been invited to play in front of this beautiful crowd in this beautiful city.”
