Before the Cosmos kickoff the 2017 NASL Fall Season, the New York Cosmos will face Spanish club, Valencia CF in a friendly match.

Following last week’s 1-0 victory over FC Edmonton the Cosmos face a two week break before returning to competitive play on the 29th against Miami FC. In order to keep legs fresh and give opportunities to those who don’t regularly get first team minutes, a friendly match had been scheduled.

Their upcoming opponents finished in 12th in Spains top flight this season as well as last. Just like the Cosmos, Valencia have a history of silverware. The club have accumulated six league titles, seven Copa del Rey trophies, three UEFA Europa Leagues and two UEFA Super Cup’s, among other titles.

This match will be the Cosmos second mid season friendly this year, previously drawing 0-0 with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. The boys in green have some experience playing Spanish competition, playing SD Eibar last season. In that friendly, New York walked away victorious, topping their opponents on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Winger Santi Mina is one to watch out for in this match. The Spaniard lead his team in goals last season, netting six. In addition to finding the back of the net himself, Mina contributed a pair of assists.

The new Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan will host this international friendly, the first in its history. Canadian Football League side Saskatchewan Roughriders will call the 33,000 capacity stadium home during the CFL season.

Valencia CEO, Mateu Alemany commented on the preseason trip stating; “Team’s first visit Canada, where interest in football is growing, against historic opposition like the New York Cosmos, it’s an important event for Valencia CF to take part in, in a strategically important market like North America.”

You can catch this friendly Saturday, July 22nd at 6pm on BeIn Sports.
