With FC Edmonton beating the Cosmos in June and the boys in green triumphing the Eddies in July, neither of the sides were able to repeat that result this time out, settling for a draw.

Despite the Cosmos looking strong in the beginning of the first half, it was Tomi Ameobi of FC Edmonton who had a pair of first half chances. A looping ball in the visitors half lead to a 1-on-1 between Ameobi and Dejan Jakovic. The 28 year-old was able to get past the defender however his attempt went wide of goal.

The 35th minute saw Ameobi being found with a through ball between two defenders, sending him through on goal. The forward’s shot fired off the corner of the woodwork, resulting in a goal kick.

The Cosmos nearly opened the games scoring in the 40th minute after two attempts on goal. Emmanuel Ledesma had a go from outside the box, forcing Eddies goalkeeper Tyson Farago to parry the shot. Ayoze got ahold of the rebound but his shot was saved for a corner kick.

Just prior to the halftime whistle, FC Edmonton were able to find the back of the net. A cross sent in by Ben Fisk found the head of Tomi Ameobi. Ameobi headed the ball across goal, finding Daryl Fordyce who tapped it in.

Eugene Starikov almost leveled the game in the 63rd minute. The Ukranian had an outside of the box attempt with his left foot, but unfortunately saw his attempt saved by Farago.

Three minutes later however, the boys in green found that much needed equalizer. Emmanuel Ledesma, the teams leading goalscorer, made space for himself on the edge of the eighteen yard box and fired with his left foot. The Argentines shot fired past the goalkeeper, scoring his sixth goal of the year.

The Cosmos thought they had earned themselves a penalty late in the game when goalscorer Emmanuel Ledesma went down in the box, however Alain Ruch, the games referee, didn’t agree.

After four minutes of stoppage time, the official blew his whistle for full time, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Cosmos Head Coach, Giovanni Savarese, commented on the games second half events saying; “I still felt we were not sorted enough, but at the end, a great goal by Ledesma. I thought it was fantastic. Then [there was] a questionable call that maybe could have went our way.”

Savarese also complimented second half substitute Eugene Starikov; “We moved the ball a lot faster, we found spaces, countered quicker and that’s why we were able to find the [equalizer] a lot easier. When Eugene [Starikov] came inside the game, I think he gave us the mobility that we needed as well.”

Colin Miller, Head Coach of FC Edmonton, commented on the match as well stating; “You take a point against the Cosmos anytime with their quality and the budget they have, so we take nothing away from the players. They gave everything right until the end with some terrific performances. It’s great to see [Daryl Fordyce] score his first since returning and it was a very entertaining match.”

The Cosmos look to earn their second win of the Fall Season when they return home, Saturday August 19th at 7:30 pm taking on Indy Eleven.
