After joining the Cosmos in April of 2013 and playing five seasons with the Boys In Green, goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer has joined FC Dallas of Major League Soccer.
The Georgia native is coming off of a solid 2017 campaign with the Cosmos where he helped the side reach The Championship Final. In 25 appearances, Maurer kept a goal against average of 1.48.
The shot-stopper commented on the decision making process saying, “I’ve had opportunities in the past, but they didn’t feel right for whatever reason, different things.”
A week long loan in July may have helped Dallas decide to sign Maurer after he joined the club in their trip to Montreal. With their starting keeper, Jesse Gonzalez, on international duty with the United States, Maurer was needed to backup Chris Seitz in net.
“Just the vibe you get from the players and how they speak about [Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja]. Being in for a short week I was able to have a couple conversations with him, but I think it’s even more about how the players view him. The guys that have been there with him and the guys that are really in day-in and day-out with him, they just speak so highly of him that he’s a players’ coach and he really takes care of his guys and that’s all you can ask for as a player.”
Maurer was certainly a cornerstone in the Cosmos’ success in the modern NASL era. Maurer has added quite a bit of silverware during his tenure in New York, winning three NASL Championships during his five seasons.
FC Dallas Technical Director, Fernando Clavijo, commented on his new man saying, “He is used to winning and I always say that winning is a habit. When you have someone who knows what it takes to win will help everyone else.”
“I will forever be proud to say that I was a player for the New York Cosmos. It is incredible to think back on all the great experiences this privilege has granted me these past five years on and off the field.” said Maurer. “And most importantly, thank you to all of the fans. Hearing the “We got Jimmy Maurer” chant will never get old and will always put a big smile on my face. Thank you for all the support and I hope to cross paths again with all of you sometime soon.”
The First Team Podcast would like to thank Jimmy Maurer for his unforgettable appearances between the sticks and hope he has a successful time in Dallas.
