Some of Cosmos Country’s newer fans might be wondering who is Werner Roth, and why is he on a Cosmos t-shirt. Roth is a Cosmos legend, a powerful defender with the club for seven years from 1972–1979, with one hundred and twenNty-five appearances.

Werner Roth was the Salvatore Barone of his day. He was that uncommon sight back then – an American talent playing alongside Pele and Beckenbauer – and brought home three Soccer Bowls for New York, as well as having captained the club.

Born in Yugoslavia, he came to the United States at the age of eight and graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School (one of NYC’s specialized high schools) as their varsity team captain. He harkens back to a time when the USMNT were a little more grateful to have someone like him on the roster; he made fifteen appearances for the United States Mens National Team.

Roth is a lifelong New Yorker, and a true Cosmos. If you want to learn more about the Cosmos of his day, check out this 2015 short interview of Werner Roth with Simon Allen (@DalaiLamaSoccer).
