After rumors emerged last week that Giovanni Savarese could be joining MLS side Portland Timbers and the New York Cosmos revealing that the Venezuelan left the club, the Cascadian side has confirmed today that Savarese has filled their vacant head coach spot.

Timbers owner, Merritt Paulson, praised his new coach saying, “Gio is an intelligent, attack-minded coach and is a driven individual who is both a great fit with us on and off the field. We are extremely pleased to welcome Gio and his family to Portland.”

Savarese replaces long term head coach, Caleb Porter, who left the Timbers in mid-November. During his time in Portland, Porter lead his team to their first MLS Cup in 2015, along with a first placed finish in the Western Conference in 2013 and 2017. Coach Gio certainly has big shoes to fill in his new home however if things go as they did in New York, fans will quickly love their new manager.

“I am both excited and proud to become the head coach of the Portland Timbers, and this is an ideal fit and outstanding opportunity for me as I take the next step in my coaching career,” commented Savarese. The passion, ambition and support surrounding this club is truly inspiring, and I am sincerely honored and grateful for this opportunity to lead it on the pitch and to build on the club’s history of success for the community and the incredible supporters of the Portland Timbers.”

During his time with the boys in green, Savarese has led the NASL side to three Soccer Bowl championships, holding the 2013, 2015 and 2016 titles. The Venezuelan leaves the Cosmos following a season in which they settled as runner-ups to the San Francisco Deltas.

“It is difficult to express in a few words how much it has meant to me and my family to be part of the New York Cosmos organization,” said Savarese. From my first day in August 2010 through today, it has been an incredible journey filled with life changing experiences and adventures.  Since the beginning, my main goal has been to honor the past while creating a new future for this historic North American soccer franchise.”

The First Team Podcast would like to thank Giovanni Savarese for all he has accomplished with the New York Cosmos and wish him the best with his new opportunity.
